Talk about a FLAMING homosexual!.... A lawyer nationally known for being a champion of gay rights died after setting himself on fire in Prospect Park in Brooklyn early Saturday morning and leaving a note exhorting people to lead less selfish lives as a way to protect the planet, the police said. The remains of the lawyer, David S. Buckel, 60, were found near Prospect Park West in a field near baseball diamonds and the main loop used by joggers and bikers. Mr. Buckel left a note in a shopping cart not far from his body and also emailed it to several news media outlets, including The New York Times. Mr. Buckel was the lead attorney in Brandon v. County of Richardson, in which a Nebraska county sheriff was found liable for failing to protect Brandon Teena, a transgender man who was murdered in Falls City, Neb. Hilary Swank won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Mr. Teena in the 1999 movie “Boys Don’t Cry.” SC

At the suggestion of Toast and similarly to the "Words we dislike" thread I present names we dislike. I'm thinking of fairly ordinary names we don't like rather than the outlandish mumsnet type fare. Robyn or Robin I've already mentioned, Zoe because almost every single one I've met has been horrible and Yvonne for similar reasons and because it sounds awful. I've just remembered Sonya and Julia as well. I don't know anyone by that name though my younger niece was nearly Julia. I just think they sound awful, especially with a northern accent. It does amuse me that Sonya is Russian for dormouse though. For men I can't stand the name Jason for a human though it's fine for a pet.

Been reading good reviews for 85 year old Willie Nelson's new album. Thought I'd - like - share this positive discovery with the group.

Forum cheatsheet notes: when a thread starts with someone quoting someone else, it's a post from another thread which has been merged into a new thread. (That's how I started the Sid Waddell thread - it was a post in Ideas for 2012 ). iirc (and Maryport or DDT can surely correct me if I'm wrong), this was the Jon Lord thread, and someone has turned it into a general thread for the great band Deep Purple. You might recall (but I'll remind you anyhow) that acclaimed musician/songwriter/Purple founder Lord was in and out of hospital in late 2011 with "treatable cancer", only he revealed in early 2012 that it was pancreatic and then died that summer. Had he announced the pancreatic nature of the beast pre-Hogmanay, Deathlist and Drop 40 cert. Hell, his death got on the BBC News. Truly a black night.

Emma Morano became Moribund as she tragically passed away 1 year ago today, at the tender age of 117 years and 137 days, 337 of which she spent being the world's oldest living person. She still stands (or lies) as the 7th oldest verified person ever.

Er no, they're all fucking ridiculous names except for the two I mentioned. I cannot stand that cunt anyway, the mere sight of him makes me feel nauseous.

I quite like Pamela, although it's out of fashion. And Maurice is OK. (Are these grandparents' names, I wonder?) All the rest are dogs, cats, cows and horses. And bears, obv.

George Bush Snr for me, mainly because he looks so bloated and 'rotting before death' (as me nan would have said) but also because the only thing holding him onto life is the fear of going to hell when he finally passes on. Probably.

My father in law has been in hospital with heart issues since Wednesday. Today he looked bad (I could not even understand his speech) and I fear things might get worse. I'm really linked to him and I'd be incredibly sorry if he dies. Plus last Sunday my mum was rushed to hospital as she turned suddenly violet/ black. She's already been discharged, but she has suffered from Alzheimer's since 2015 and I fear she might not have long left too. This happened shortly after another hospitalization for my father, with emphysema worsening. This has been a tough period, hope it gets better.
