Pelé, Harris, Whale, Vialli, Benedict What a majestic top 5 they would make for the 2023 DeathList! Has the DL ever had all its top five as successes?

John Madden died on this day a year ago, aged 85. Madden was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, but never got to play in a regulation game due to a knee injury. He would begin coaching for college football teams, and in 1967, became the coach of the Oakland Raiders. In 1977, his team would win Super Bowl XI; Madden would retire the next year due to occupational burnout. Madden then became a sportscaster, notably hosting CBS' Super Bowl coverage with Pat Summerall beginning in 1981. He popularized the use of telestrator technology by using it to showcase diagrams discussing the players' strategies. He would commentate on CBS, Fox, ABC, and then NBC, before retiring in 2009. In 1988, Madden lent his likeness and voice to Electronic Arts' John Madden Football- this spawned a series of games that maintain popular annual releases to this day. (this was possibly the first jumpscare in video game history, and it was unintentional)

Pelé gains another week of life every time this thread deems his demise imminent. I think that means by now he's a safe bet for 2047.

I think a new topic is in order to highlight the large amount of Russian tycoon deaths in the past years since the war in Ukraine started and just before that.. Here's a list of the past year. Last one was (another) sausage tycoon. The second one this year so maybe a sub-topic of suspicious deaths of Russian sausage tycoons?

Stuart Hall. Because why not. Turns 93 next year. Generally forgotten about on account of being a nonce.

Given we've got the former DDP host who brought in the first ban, that being Octopus and the ban on picking kids in 2008, then here's the FFBI ban co-hosts view. It was Reptile who wanted to boost the number of points for unique picks, and I was sceptical. I thought players would be annoyed by nitpicking changes. But Reptile (and Grim) were supportive of my push for a harsher FFBI ban than people were expecting, and so I in turn backed the 4 points for a unique pick. And I'll admit, I called the "fan reaction" utterly wrong, as it was mostly overjoyed at the move. It benefitted less the likes of Spade and Salmon trying to win, and more your Gooseberry Crumbles with their unique obscure notable knowledge. I do still like the Drop 40 bonus though, and if everyone on this forum is gaming it for their jokers, it's still more meritocratic than the unlucky 13th bonus, which was pot luck. I feel like if something was to change, it would be an increase in unique bonuses rather than anything else, and even so, I feel there has to be an upper limit on those.

If he goes before the end of the year, he won't be the first senior cleric to go right at the end of a year they were not on the Deathlist, after Desmond Tutu's passing on Boxing Day last year.

Very, very funny resigning from an extremely easy job citing exhaustion and frailty then enjoying the benefits and pension for almost a decade. Also funny telling God that you cannot be arsed hearing him prattle on to you and you only anymore.

On the Sky News banner saying the Vatican has said Benedict experienced a sudden worsening of his health in the last few hours and is receiving medical attention. Sounds very like when QEII went albeit she wasn't in as bad a state as him prior. Sounds like he won't make 2023

Getting a bit annoying now. I can normally submit my DDP early in the full knowledge that it'll be fine. This year it seems two big names could cark it at any given moment. Both are already on my 2022 lists anyway, but would be good if they could keep breathing into 2023. Edit: Actually I don't have Benedict XVI in 2022 so he better live!

A little reminder that you still can predict the next DeathList. I know, everyone's waiting on Pelé...
