Updated the list to reflect Luan Peters who died before the game started.

In 2015 I learnt the names and constituencies on all 650 MPs, which proved rather useful for my line of work. So short have the subsequent parliaments been and so great the turnover of old > new members that all that memorising became redundant quite quickly! I can't even begin to imagine learning the names of 780+ members of the House of Lords. Think I know about 300 or so, but not through trying!

A really controversial political figure and a totally unexpected death, personally I was expecting for former president Ricardo Lagos go first, because he retired from politics a week ago... one to see in the next years. https://chile.as.com/actualidad/que-paso-con-ricardo-lagos-esta-fue-la-drastica-decision-del-ex-presidente-de-chile-n/?outputType=amp

For me this is the biggest death of the year so far (the former president of your country dying in a helicopter crash will be something hard to top). He was like the Dubya of Chile, he was gaffe-prone and the word "piñericosa" was used every time he made a stupid comment or made something silly. He was a mediocre leader imo, his first term was decent but not that good, the rescue of the 33 miners was the highlight of those 4 years, and his second term started horribly with his terrible management of the protests in 2019, although I do think he was very good controlling covid in the country. I know a lot of people hate him, but I just couldn't. Here's a compilation of Piñericosas made in 2018. You probably won't find any of these to be funny unless you know spanish (except for 6:00-7:07 which are universally funny).

The most gravely ill on the list: 1)Josip Manolic: 104 in March, bedridden and received last rites in December, seemed an imminent death. However his family insists he is well, so ok. 2)Khamtai Siphandone: 100 in two days, unable to appear for his birthday, whose celebrations have been ongoing for six months. Likely bedridden or even on life support. 3)Jimmy Carter: 100 in October, almost a whole year in hospice care. 4)Ali Hassan Mwinyi: hospitalised and family asking for prayers. Still, it seems not too serious. 5)Violeta Chamorro: soon 95, airlifted to Costa Rica last year, recordwoman of dementia and brain tumors. One of those five is really really overdue.

I genuinely did go to this last year. I'm heading back to Reykjavik this year, I'll see if there happens to be a new donated piece.

There is no cure for baseless conspiracy theories combined with stupid. Apparently the announcement of Charles Cancer is part of a plot to push experimental cancer treatments on the world as part of the new world order!! Lots of stuff like this online.

Probably a good shout tbh. 84 this year and has taken a leave of absence yet again from the Lords. Would tend to suggest he's not in good health.

It's absolutely dire over on the Deaths in 2024 page atm. Editors clearly bored AF so they're creating new pages for total nobodies. Just a random example from the last week: Grace Boadu, Ghanian herbal medical practitioner. Wiki really needs to tighten up their grasp on article creation. They're in excess of 2 million biographies now. In the last 6 months I've been going through the 1920–1934 births and I've found 1000s of ppl who have died off radar but haven't had their pages updated in years, sometimes over a decade. The whole Wiki project is becoming unmanageable now due to it being so bloated with biographies of nobodies.
