Loads of snow in the village last night. Put my boots on and trudged through it down to the local pub only to find it locked up. Not one person about. No sign of the landlord or any signs of any living being nearby. Then I remembered. It closed eight years ago for economic reasons. Nothing to do with the snow.

I can remember having a completely pointless argument with a sport-obsessed friend about the semantics of whether Jason Robinson was a shit rugby player or not. All hinging on the word shit and whether anyone could really technically be described as such. I fear that the argument lasted at least an hour. You know it's gone on too long when the onlookers, originally entertained or intrigued by such a bloody stupid debate move on for fear of being used as argument-fodder, "What do you reckon, Dave? Can any player, let alone one that played international rugby really be described as shit?" "LEAVE ME OUT OF IT" exclaims Dave running into the night, hurtling into the oncoming traffic of the nearby arterial route just to avoid becoming an active participant. Oh, happy day.

I've only ever been to St Alban's by mistake (wasn't me left it a pile of smoking ruins, you can't prove a thing ) because of a disaster on the M25 and getting redirected. Very middle class. Artisan coffee, wanky patisseries (sp?) stupid house prices etc People who live in Leek, Staffordshire. They're for the watching. No-righters, every last one. Not sure about Rey (I'm very amused by your bad mood ) but I'd say she sounds more middle than upper. My sister in law who is a lawyer and had a military brat / boarding school education is similar. Upper is simultaneously more drawled and clipped, but the British aristocracy usually throw curve balls. Prince William and his glottal stops for example.

Kudos for ending with "unfathomable" * eta, what I have noticed in the last 4 or 5 years (yes, base twelve unit) is that the influx of Eastern European drug dealers means the young stoners I work with, are having to buy in grams. They do the conversion no bother at all, reminiscent of when I a boy and idiots that wouldn't know 2+2 could rhyme off in seconds what a 25p treble would return at 8/11, 11/2 and 9/4....

Trying not to derail the thread again, but I was only putting forward my experience. What really is ludicrous is making the teaching of metric compulsory for everyone, and then sending them out into a world where people drive in mph, measure in feet and inches and weigh in pounds and ounces. Thus recessing the progress the scheme was undoubtedly intended to make. Who really wants to divide up things into twelfths and fourteenths...it's more difficult. Obviously charon speaks for the seafaring community re the nautical issue. I was never taught it, so I find it unfathomable.

Yes, got no excuses for them. Interesting that I have managed to know more people from that town than you have. Please stop exporting them.

I think the whole "how would you feel if your relatives were discussed on this forum?" argument from our irate visitor can be dismissed now that our new friend 123jeff is literally calculating his great-great-aunt Chiyo Miyako's chances of dying in the next 10 days.

Don't know if your mystery lady fits this particular bill but I came across a couple of Dallas actors who'd starred in Kevin Bacon films.

I've only ever known one person from St Albans and he was nice enough. Most of the twats I know seem to come from the County Durham/North Yorkshire border so the opposite end of the country. Unfortunately, I also have to say that from a customer service point of view by far the worst customers are Australians, especially Australian women, so perhaps there is some exchange thing going on and we get your twats and you get ours.

Height? Really? I wouldn't know where to start in cm. There's a foot between me and Mr B I know that (doesn't matter, we're rarely vertical) and my brother professes to be 5'8" but isn't... I started primary in England in 1975 for the record.

Just saw a headline on the news "Harlem Globetrotters surprise fan with Downs Syndrome". I thought "That's a bit insensitive. They could have surprised them with an autographed basketball or shirt".

I still find it fascinating re the above discussion that people still measure things in inches. I was taught (during hail, snow, howling gales, etc. etc.) the metric system, decimals, blah blah blah. The UK still seems precious about its imperial measurments, and I have no idea why. At some point, this became a "bloody Europeans" issue, yet I was being taught the metric system before we joined the EEC. It's like when an old country house burns to the ground, and the whole country wants to preserve its burnt-out shell for posterity...why the fuck should we? If you want a modern economy, get modern I say.

Pathetic how these pc morons completely miss the point so often which this case perfectly exemplifies.
