4 pointsWe are on double figures!!! Horst Eckel, German football player and world champion of 1954, has died at age 89. He was the last surviving player from the 1954 World Cup final and the entire German World Cup squad. https://www.spiegel.de/sport/fussball/letzter-fussball-weltmeister-von-1954-horst-eckel-ist-tot-a-67813e51-d68d-4106-a839-defb4da99c13

3 pointsThat's the spirit Predictor. Never give up until the final whistle (unless you are the Latvian women's football team - in that case you can probably give up a little before then) As the great General Melchett once said, "if nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through"

2 pointsCongrats to @Bibliogryphon, @Great Uncle Bulgaria, @YorkshireBanker, @Handrejka, @wannamaker, @The Old Crem, @Doulton, @msc, @The Daredevil, @Book, @Toast, @WEP and myself for the first hit of the pool with the (quick and expected) passing of Anthony Sher today. Please choose another candidate to replace him on your list. Standings so far : 6 points for all (first hit of the pool + the death in itself is one point) except for the Old Crem, Book and I who scored 8 (first spot on the list + first hit of the pool) As I was scrolling down the list I saw that @JoeMoneypenny hasn't changed David Gulpilil yet : please do it so you can enter the pool properly ! Edit : If ever I missed someone by mistake, just let me know so I can change the score

2 pointsWho cares? The reason why we don’t know is because there’s no interest in non-notable widows. Thread should get a dead tag.
-
2 pointsWell done, Biblio, excellent! Before the game opened Sher was also in my Top Three, next to Frank Field and an Indian guy who died an hour before the game started....

2 pointsI think the key thing was to move towards giving the game its integrity back. Which seems a laughable thing to say about a Dead Pool but you all know what I mean. we did our best to spot the already existing FFBI picks as well as eliminating the new ones but yes a couple got through the net. There are a lot of names in the database and I think we did a pretty good job of cleansing it and also giving the Theme Team league it’s integrity back too. (I know I’m biased). On querying the individual picks in a theme team well I just think that’s a step too far provided the general theme is followed - Fujimori was a ‘joke’ inclusion because his name appeared twice on his wiki page - kudos to Sir Creep for his humour rather than criticism of the pick.

2 pointsI can't remember which thread was for lists of people mentioned in songs, so I'll shoehorn this in here: weird how nobody namechecked in "Brimful of Asha" has died since the song's release in 1997: Asha Bhosle: born 1933 Mohammed Rafi: died 1980 Lata Mangeshkar: born 1929 Jacques Dutronc: born 1943 Marc Bolan: died 1977 Govind Arun Ahuja ("the Chichi music"): Born 1963

2 pointsThere have been a couple of big deaths (and Doyle Hamm) to shake up the leaderboard a little, so time for another update I reckon. 28th November - Frank Williams (Sir) 28th November - Doyle Hamm (not Sir) 29th November - David Gulpilil I also note that the Disney Wiki page (whatever that is) is acknowledging the death of Val Bettin Val Bettin | Disney Wiki | Fandom I realise that this is probably someone just copying and pasting from Wikipedia. However, given that the rules allow for specialised websites, and given that we have seen a picture of his actual fucking grave, I think we can take it that the man is genuinely dead. Therefore I am taking the decision to award the points. MarkB4 gains the princely total of 6 points, and moves up, eh, 6 points on the leaderboard! Up at the business end, Etush, Eesti and Grim leap up into 3rd, 4th and 5th places respectively. I break the 2000 point barrier to consolidate my position in 2nd. However, the runaway leader continues to run away, with Drol's selection of David Gulpilil continuing the domination. One hit away from becoming only the second player ever to break the 3000 point barrier. David Gulpilil's popularity as a pick (11 selections) meant that the ZZZ team of most popular picks jumped up the table, right? Well it would have done, had I not completely overlooked him when putting the team together. Not to worry - we are all losers on this one. The real news, however, comes at the bottom of the table. Yorkshire Banker has finally put the spikes on, stubbed out the cigarette, and reluctantly joined the race. The Frank Williams pick immediately vaults them into 4th last place. Is it too late to see the greatest comeback since the one that Predictor is about to do? Here are the standings: Drol (2716 points) 15 hits [David Gulpilil. 1 pointCongratulations Bibliogryphon! The death of Anthony Sher will now shake up some teams and games for 2022.
-
1 pointWith Antony Sher's death - I can no longer say the above. My secondary name is going in. Day or so maybe before I submit?
-
1 pointThe Wiki page for Fujimori used to have his name as "Alberto Fujimori Fujimori". It doesn't any more so he probably doesn't actually have a reduplicated name, but it was a clear good faith inclusion and not something daft like putting Tom Parker on a centenarian theme team or something.

1 pointThere was a chance for FFBI teams to slip through the system, basically if they were already part of the database and didn't get another check. It happened maybe 2-3 times, but it was never important enough to have the effort to correct that. For example, there is a person picked this year called Gabrielle D'Allonches, the cancer-having mum, of the cancer-having partner of "Catlady" Jocelyn Wildenstein. She has no fame, but will also never obit. These FFBI cases are, well, naturally slowly disappearing out of the system. And the more time passes, the less likely they are to get obits anyway. I think we actually contemplated whether Ronnie Pickering was a legit pick, at least, I remember, I personally thought about it, and begrudgingly accepted him. He was a meme before he had cancer, so, for better or worse, known for that. On the other hand, we just had the case of Stacey Pentland, who was actually described in some obits as a "Tik Tok star". But that happened only because of the cancer. You'd never heard of her name without it. We will never revisit the pages of old years, I can't imagine anybody doing it. Database/website-wise it is MUCH more trouble than it's worth it.

1 pointThere’s a good thread running on the Crossroads fan site on Facebook about actors still alive and some telling comments. Jane Rossington (Jill) is in very poor health aged 78. David Lawton (Chef Mr Booth) is 96 and still going strong. He’s losing his sight and hearing by all accounts but still living at home and supported by his friends.

1 pointI'm actually a bit troubled by how many Basildonians are on here. I could understand the Scots with the dreich, and generally being dour, but we are becoming a majority. That can't be good, surely?
