2 pointsInteresting thread (well I say 'interesting'...) on Lil Tay 'death' and how it was (not) reported by the BBC.
-
1 pointI'll be honest, I've had the tab open for about half an hour as it wasn't midnight yet. Thread usually goes beserk just after midnight, but suddenly there was a notification, which alerted me that it was past midnight: it was your votes! So I added mine! Sorry, we should have coordinated better! Just setting things up for the Old Lady to swoop in, as usual...

1 pointi know this is not the thread for it, but since you brought the "Orange Man bad" routine. I honestly thought Trump did an ok job in his first 3 years. Not great, but absolutely not the descent into the abyss of Hell that CNN and MSNBC promised us: decent economy, no new wars...it was just regular conservative business (you know, minus the tweets and the impeachment). I would go as far as to say that his first 3 years of presidency were, in many aspects, better than Carter's term. In fact, most analysts were predicting by the end of 2019 that The Donald was heading into a landslide reelection never seen since Reagan's second term. Then 2020 came and it all went downhill from there. Easily the worst year of any president since the Great Depression. Yeah you could say that most of it (COVID, BLM riots) was not his fault and just his bad luck, but his response clearly did not help. I have no doubt in my mind that if he had just SHUT his mouth, listened to the scientists and made a few masked speeches here and there, urging Americans to stay home and fight this virus like the true patriots they were, the nation would have rallied behind him and he would easily still be president today. Because despite ALL of the shitshow that was 2020, he still BARELY lost that election. Vlogging Through History put it best when he said that out of all his enemies, Trump is his own worst one. Now back to Carter, I really hope that he would at least get to celebrate his 99th birthday.

1 pointStunning what does and doesn’t get a QO. The guy who was the coach of the British equestrian Olympic team is still waiting, but this guy gets one.
-
1 pointBit of a QO dilemma. My own pick Nick Hitchon died on 23rd July, but somewhat surprisingly (to me at least), there has been very little in terms of obits. The best I can come up with is this: Remembering Professor William “Nick” Hitchon - College of Engineering - University of Wisconsin-Madison The obit rules for this pool states that: "4. Social media posts, personal blogs etc do not count. " However that is not a personal blog - it the College of Engineering blog. So does it count? As is my wont in these situations, my instinct is to wait and see if anything better shows up, therefore putting off actually making a decision. Were it another players pick, I would probably allow it, but as I have an obvious conflict of interest, I will wait for now.

1 pointOnly the two hits that I can see since the last update, but they are the two biggies of George Alagiah and Tony Bennett. Alagiah was the third most popular pick this year, with 25 players selecting him. Bennett was a lot less popular, but the 10 picks was enough to secure him a place on the ZZZ team of most popular picks. 21st July: Tony Bennett 24th July: George Alagiah None of the leading three players had selected either Alagiah or Bennett, which means that we have a new top 3. @Thatcher uses their double hit to become the first person to reach the 1000 points landmark and is the new leader. @WEP and @The Unknown Man both cashed in their Alagiah Jokers to climb into second and third respectively. @Lady_Fiona, @TQRand @Young One all scores a double hit to drag themselves out of the basement and into contention. In fact the popularity of the 2 picks means that there is plenty of bunching in the chasing pack, with 19 players within 2 hits (or a Joker hit) of the lead. All to play for! @msc's cunning plan of having all of their picks die in December has come undone, as Bennett broke ranks to give them their first hit of the year. Only 4 players still to trouble the scorers now. Here is the top 7 (everyone over 800 points). Check out the full scoreboard on page 1, and let me know if I have missed any obscure hits. Thatcher (1034 points) 7 hits [George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Gina Lollobrigida, Milan Kundera Rolf Harris*, Ted Kaczynski, Tony Bennett] WEP (989 points) 6 hits [Augie Nieto, George Alagiah*, Mutulu Shakur, Ralf Harris, Teresa Taylor, Tim Lobinger] The Unknown Man (893 points) 5 hits [George Alagiah*, Gianluca Vialli, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Ted Kaczynski] Death Impends (891 points) 7 hits [Bert I Gordon, Billy Graham, Ed Ames, Francoise Gilot, Jimmy Weldon, Lucille Randon, Milan Kundera] Toast (857 points) 9 hits [Fay Weldon, George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Just Fontaine, King Constantine, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Ryiuchi Sakamoto, Winnie Ewing] Arghton (856 points) 9 hits [Carmen Sevilla, Emlain Kabua, George Alagiah, Gianluca Vialli, Ivan Silayev*, Otis Taylor, Rafiq Nishonov, Tim Lobinger, Winnie Ewing) Wannamaker (814 points) 8 hits [Frank McGarvey, George Alagiah, King Constantine, Pervez Musharraf, Milan Kundera, Rolf Harris, Ryiuchi Sakamoto, Ted Kaczynski]

1 pointCTE again. imo within a decade "end stage CTE" is going to be a more common diagnosis AND a common deadpool pick.

1 pointGoing Underground, you've been around for years, When are you going to get an avatar? As for Herbert, RIP and all that, but I thought the few works of his which I trudged through in my youth were truly execrable. 'The Fog' stands out as a particularly poor example of horror writing, livened only by the hilariously gratuitous lesbian scene. I read this as a thirteen year old and still remember the bit about the Vicar pissing over his congregation. Can't remember much about the rest of it though.
-
1 pointNowt, unless they're famous enough to warrant press coverage and some of us are smart enough to pick them in a deadpool ahead of time. Obviously, as bishop of Carlisle I would qualify for an obit, feeling pretty chipper of late though. Might even put in for Ian Cundy's job soon.
-
1 pointIndeed - very sad news. It was such a shock. When I heard the news I could have cried. First Charlie Drake, now James Brown. I predict a major slide for my team on the DDP scoreboard.
