Hawking and Bowen on same day - not surprising that Jim checked out on a double.

He should get a Viking funeral, set adrift in a burning speedboat!!

Only if you use the baffling American system of Month/Day/Year. The proper Pi Day is 22nd July. My favourite Hawking story is when he appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation, the only man ever to play himself (well, a holographic simulation). They gave him a tour of the set and as he went through the engine room he said, "I'm working on that..."

Wouldn't worry too much about that now. You're on mod watch. Anything you write now will have to be approved by a mod or admin.

This is very funny and I’ve never heard it before so I recited it to the old man, chortling merrily, but he promptly pissed on my comedy chips by informing me that he’s been telling that joke since he was about 6 (he’s 47). Miserable old git

Same here. There wasn’t any major disruption though. It was 17 minutes of moments of silent plus a poem reading, a protest, and a call to action to our legislators.

This photoshoot is Burt Reynolds finest moment at his peak in my opinion. A very popular photo in the 1980s I believe

Oh alright...in fact, you could actually do it with T16 D16 while we're being dickheads about it

Just my opinion. My point about our DLers still stands. Absolute gents one and all. LFN, charon, love em. And especially msc. Being calm and reasonable all over the place which is actually the most unusual DL behaviour I've ever seen. Never done before. Good for him. Also, he never sends seething reports. Like you.

Eighty-five years since sled-dog Balto died aged 14. Famed for delivering the diptheria anti-toxin to Nome, Alaska. There's a statue of him in Central Park and his remains are mounted on display (see above) at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was voiced by Kevin Bacon in the film (loosely) based on his life.

So a man who helped unlock the secrets of the Universe and who could no have had a normal sex life in other 50 years is condemed as a perv. Didn't mention his bad treatment at the hands of his female carers either... Ten a penny solipistic statement....

Just for reference, a conspiracy theory forum I mooch on is half convinced John McCain doesn't have cancer at all. I'm reserving judgement but apparently his 'hurt leg boot' (whatever you call the thing) has mysteriously swapped from one leg to the other - people are wondering if he's not ill at all and the boot is actually hiding an ankle tag bracelet. Terminal cancer would apparently be a good way to avoid awkward questions about his naughtiness in the past. Just putting it out there!

Was hoping for a nice minor death to round of the current update, but now Stephy H has carked it so I have to make him the lead. The caption for Ken Dodd's picture was going to be "Two things in life are certain: death and... One thing in life is certain."

Quite sad. As far as I know, he was slightly overrated as a scientist (not quite deserving that god-like status), but immensely important in popularizing science (black holes, string theory). As a cultural icon on one level with Muhammad Ali or Madonna.

My reason for including him in my personal list was "because he should have died decades ago", but honestly I didn't really think he would die this year. He was just one of those people who seemed to keep ticking on. Great mind. RIP.
