2 pointsGetting the update out of the way now. First off, Elena Huelva. Sigh. She was Banana's second sub and has a base 50 points. But also rejected from the DDP as her social media following, though large, predicated on being ill. Thus I am applying a penalty of 30 points so the gain is only 20. Up next was tennis star Dick Savitt whose death sees Torva Messor serve the little yellow ball onto the HPDP court and score her first points of the season. She gains 28 points (20 base + 8 bonus). Savitt was overshadowed by another demise that day, however. Italy football great Gianluca Vialli was the second-most-popular pick of the entire pool. The part of the Pele/Benny squad of "please make 2023" who actually made it, he naturally was placed high on most teams. An Fear Beag, Banana, CaptainChorizo, chilean way, diego, Famous6Eva, gcreptile, JoeMoneypenny, LizLemon, MariNisia, maryportfuncity, nantonian2013, Perhaps, Sean, Thatcher, TheDumbReaper, ThereWillBeDeaths7, wannamaker all get 50 points. DeathBecomesThem, drol, Funeralopolis, Hell, justonecornetto, msc, RadGuy, The Unknown Man 45. Toast 40. Book, BuffaloPhil, Clarence, Pedro67, and theoldlady 35. The Old Crem 30. BabyBlue and Charles de Gaulle a first sub hit for 25. Back to the low-key unique with US journalist Bernard Kalb. A unique for John "요한" Sulu who made 100 but didn't make 101, Sulu beams up 56 points (40 base + 16 bonus). King Constantine II was moderately popular with 5 teams picking him though a bit of a Greece-y spoon as most of them were banking on him as a later-year death. wannamaker gains 15 points, Young One 10, Murdoc 5, and diego and Etushispushingupdaisies both get their first sub points for 25. Natalie Fornasier. Another sigh. Again, she was rejected for DDP so instant penalty. Banana had her as a unique so the pre-penalty total is 56 (40 base + 16 bonus) but I will be subtracting 36 points from that so he only gains 20 points. A little more famous is Italian screen diva Gina Lollobrigida. Surprisingly not picked on any previous HPDPs under my watch, the lucky timing for BabyBlue benefits them by 35 points (25 base + 10 bonus). IIRC Kane Tanaka was a unique hit last year. Double checking, yes, she was. History repeats itself with the WOP unique once more. BuffaloPhil cloistered alone in picking 118-year-old French nun Lucile Randon, and is rewarded with 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus). Spanish economist Juan Velarde Fuertes is now Juan Velarde Muertes. No doubt we will look back on 2023 as the year this towering figure died. At any rate one individual who was invested in this guy was WEP, whose eclectic mix is on the board with 49 points (35 base + 14 bonus). And thus here is the second scoreboard, with all but nine teams all off the mark now. Defending champion Banana sees himself perched atop once again, however the FFBI penalties keep it close while we're still in the early days. 1. Banana 115 2. justonecornetto 90.95 3. msc 86.77 4. BuffaloPhil 84.95 5. drol 81.77 6. diego 75.82 7. RadGuy 67.7 8. wannamaker 65.95 9. BabyBlue 60.95 10. John "요한" Sulu 56 11. LizLemon 52.7 12. nantonian2013 51.27 =13. 2 pointsI reckon this is going to be an age thing. Us oldies probably downvoting crap (IMO) and the youngsters voting the other way.

2 pointsHe doesn't look at death's door to me. For example, unlike a lot of terminally ill older people, his hands are not discoloured. I reckon maybe another couple of years.

1 pointLeave Drop 40 as +3, increase Unique to +5 (problem with going higher is that random olds are the most likely to be unique, these days, and I don't feel picking random olds shows a great deal of extra effort), and then adopt something similar to what's done over at alt obits: reward a pick that only two teams share with a +4 and a pick that only 3 share with a +3. The numbers can be adjusted but this would be my basic proposal.

1 pointMy suggestions to those issues are to make your list from least likely to most likely in advance (maybe today as if there has been a hit already) and to minimise your browser screen before coming to the DeathList site so it doesn’t show you anything you don’t want to see, only the _/50 dead.

1 pointI've just finished scrutinising all teams for irregularities. @The Unknown Man, there's a couple of errors on your team – you've got Michael J. Fox, who isn't (quite) one of the 50 playable names, at #12, and duplicate Rhod Gilberts at #18 and #23 – but fortunately, you have two eligible substitutes, so you don't need to do anything. I've removed Michael and the lower Rhod from your team on my spreadsheet, and your subs, Tony Bennett and Randy Jackson, will compete at #24 and #25. Everything else looks fine, and we've got a nice round 50 players, so time to crack out the bold red text: SUBMISSIONS OFFICIALLY CLOSED.

1 pointWorld's 11th-oldest, Shinobu Hayashi dead at 113 according to 110club. Around 25/26 people born in the 1900s remain.

1 pointDoes anyone know how many Harris victims there are? Records seem inconsistent on that subject. I understand there were over 10, even though he only got charged based on seven. Rare for the Deathlist's most evil candidate of the year to also be its most worthy addition, let alone its most worthy newcomer.

1 pointOver 13 months since the last post. 2022 was quite quiet, taking only Leslie Phillips. And now Carole Cook's dead right at the start of 2023, (excluding Gilbert) leaving four survivors of the original list. Eva Marie Saint vs. Jane Morgan vs. Jimmy Carter vs. Joyce Randolph. (The other still going "Class of" threads of folks born in the 1920s are "Class of 1920" that has 4 living survivors, "Class of 1921" that still has a relatively large amount of them as well as "Class of 1926", and "Class of 1927" with around eight survivors)

1 pointIt's getting to be that time of year... Bugging your friend, who's a nurse at Cedars-Sinai, for updates on ill Jewish comedians? Perusing the Premier League forums to see which manager's brother has pancreatic cancer? Do tell.

1 pointWith people like Gullis and Lee I imagine they try and moderate their language and pronouncements because they are MPs. If they didn't I can imagine them going full BNP
-
1 pointThe man’s always been an absolute toilet, very much in the neanderthal class with 30p Lee and Gullis and Clarke-Smith. This is the standard the Tories are at now.

1 pointThat doesn't sound like someone who's gonna be alive in 3 months. Maybe the Reaper's just keeping him alive to punish him for the shite he got up to. I mean his £15 million wealth might be helping him linger.

1 pointNgl, even though you’re probably not gonna win, I really like your team. Apart from Lima (who’s notable for being in a boy band, which I generally hate), all interesting people imo. I think in dead pooling, if you’re not aiming to win the whole thing, then selecting a team of interesting individuals is the way to go...

1 pointMy 10th correct prediction for this year. Maybe the most notable mexican actress and propably she cant bear any longer after Trumps won the election. R.I.P. Lupita !

1 pointAny ETA on a decision on the name of The Game? If not, will a shortlist be posted in poll format so we can vote on 'em? (I think The Ashes is a dead set cert)
