UK figures: 2021 peak: Cases: January 6th - 62,322 Hospitalisations: January 12th - 4,583 Deaths: January 23rd - 1,348 2022 peak: Cases: January 5th - 193,814 Hospitalisations: December 28th - 2,291 Deaths: January 18th - 438 3 times the cases. Half the hospitalisations. A third the deaths. That didn't happen by accident. If the Omicron variant had been the first wave of Covid-19, it would have spread further and faster and there would have been even more deaths than there have been. The vaccine protects against severe disease (in most cases), reducing deaths and improving outcomes. By all means, you do you, but I'll never understand why people spend so much time telling scientists - who've spent their life's works researching these subjects and preparing for these challenges - that they don't know what they're talking about.

My guess is his two older brothers and Glenn Beck are the dissenting scientists…

Thích Nhất Hạnh (1926-2022) Fuck Jimmy Karta! I hate you Jimmy Karta! (Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh upon knowing he will never be the king of immortals) Age at death: 95 Known health issues: Suffered a stroke which would have killed two adult elephants at once in 2014. Wheelchair bound and utterly frail in his last years, he survived a bout of pneumonia which required various weeks of ICU in Thailand in fall 2019. This man has been dying and teaching "the art of undying" for years. Cause of death: Natural causes. Alignment: Nothing bad to say, he was a great man. An admired spiritual leader who did everything he could for peace in the world and, if I may say, understood things thousands of times better than those awful cardinals and ayatollahs. Long live to his teachings!

I get the sense this was more selected than drawn... because of the clear love we have for each other.

Can we all give the COVID related stuff a rest? Let’s appreciate the big man and his response to encountering Avid Merrion in the noughties:

You have until midnight GMT on January 31 to get your teams in. All gamerunner decisions are final (unless I've fucked something up, in which case I'll just delete my post and make it look like I was right all along). My DMs are open and not in a "aubergine emoji" way.

Currently being talked about in the dead pop stars thread, certainly famous enough for her own thread.

The fact is that when Hazel O'Connor was launched with Breaking Glass and its soundtrack album, her new-wave vocal style was very obviously derived from Lene Lovich, who had indeed had a hit record the year before and was still around, if on the way down. Re George Michael, I'm not sure there's much credit in having sex with a man who was arrested in a public toilet.

We're officially up. The sidebars are updated, 2021 in the archives, and a little introductory post by me ahead of the actual obits. Plenty of work to go - but we're open.
