19 pointsI'd just like to wish everyone festive greetings. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a health battle of my own over the last few months, which has meant - with the best will in the world - that I didn't feel like spending much time on DeathList. It is nothing malignant, or terminal and I am recovering well. I feel very lucky and grateful for what I have. Anyway, I have decided at the last minute that I will be entering a DDP team, so look forward to spending most of the day trawling the site for candidates and I also look forward to being more active here in 2024

12 pointsKiribati, one of my favourite countries. The "ti" is pronounced "ss", they have towns named London, Paris, Poland and Banana, and they have 3 time zones dividing a population the size of Colchester.

7 pointsSome names I thought about including for 2024 but weren't seriously ill/old enough to make the top 50. I wonder how many will make it to 2025: Woody Allen, 90 in 2025 Julie Andrews, 90 Giorgio Armani, 91 Jim Bakker, 85 Paul Biya, 92 Pat Buchanan, 88 Carol Burnett, 92 Dick Cavett, 89 Joan Collins, 92 Kenneth Copeland, 89 Bill Cosby, 88 The Dalai Lama, 90 Joseph DeAngelo (the Golden State killer), 80 Judi Dench, 91 Sam Donaldson, 91 Michael Dukakis, 92 Jane Fonda, 88 Morgan Freeman, 88 Jane Goodall, 91 Seymour Hersh, 88 Juan Carlos I, 87 Rita Moreno, 94 Jack Nicklaus, 85 Teodoro Obiang, 83 Roman Polanski, 92 Bob Schieffer, 88 Klaus Schwab, 87 Gloria Steinem, 91 Valentino, 93

6 pointsEverybody who visits an nursing home would be surprised on how long some people can survive in absolutely horrible condition. I had a 87-year old patient who had terminal cancer, which wasn't treatable anymore so he technically was in the same situation as Jimmy Carter and he was still alive on my last day of work with no indication of dying any time soon, after having this disease for years. At Jimmy's age, his cells divide much slower so his cancer is less aggressive than for younger folks.

6 pointsMy boring 2024 prediction will be a 1928 collapse. Given that 1928 babies are turning 96 next year, the amount left that are on the DL (Kennedy, Morris, Le Pen), previously on/must return to the DL (Chomsky), or potentially DL-y (Lovell, Watson, Lehrer, Dr. Ruth, Marion Ross, etc) is pretty impressive, and feels like a bubble about to burst.

5 pointsBillionare Ted Turner has had Lewy body dementia since at least 2018. Would be a strong pick in 2025 if still alive,as 7 years is on the high end of life expectency for people with that disease.

5 pointsGooseberry is usually Mystic Meg on these things so only fair I make two quick predicts. 2024 is a leap year. Previous leap years have seen the reaper go a bit nuts on A Listers. There were more celebs dying in 2017 but you remember more of them from 2016. The DL record will be smashed. Of the twenty five being carried over there will be a huge number of dying, old and very frail people. A number of returnees look on their last legs. There's some decent newcomers out there too. Unless they absolutely fuck it up DL24 should start with a very high floor before the vagaries of death hit us.

4 pointsWe have our first hit, but unfortunately in the wrong year: Our No. 26 Torsun Teichgräber aka Torsun Burkhardt has died yesterday. He was 49 and had cancer. https://www.zeit.de/kultur/musik/2023-12/torsun-burkhardt-tod-krebs-egotronic The place will be filled as quickly as possible. Edit: Annette Rexrodt von Fircks, last year at No.31, is getting Torsuns place.

4 pointsRight - midnight, entries closed - 49 teams in and listed - won't publish the masterlist until New Year's Day out of respect to anyone trying to avoid their picks being spotted and put to work in other pools. Jimmy Carter apparently alive, thankfully! It'll likely surprise nobody that he's smashed it as most popular pick this time around.
-
4 pointsI have no expectations now. In my third year I finished third in the DDP, with 8 hits and 64 points! Wouldn't even get me in the top 50 now. For a short, heady period I was even at #1. I still have the screenshot
