Scavenger Hunt Bingo Deadpool VI

This Novellos category might be the trickiest ever in a Scav game. Been searching for hours to see if any members of Travis as of the year 2000 have health defects.

Spent about two hours assembling a team, and getting annoyed in hopes I understood Ivor Novellos properly.

It's not going to give away any trade secrets, but I liked seeing that ye olde TJS pick John McCabe would've qualified if this game were run in 2015.

Oh, I hope I can do something in the next days. Past two weekends were peak Pride season here, and busy weeks at work (holiday season = same work on fewer shoulders). I'll try!

I've nearly finished my research, some more conclusive than others. Will definitely be entering, and I'll try and post an update on previous rounds too before this one gets going.

Thank you everyone who have sent in a flurry of teams over the weekend.

I will try to start working through the verification but I am a bit behind at the moment.

The game will start on 1st August and when the lists get published I will update any hits that have occurred.

Those who have not been verified keep an eye out for any challenges or confirmation over the next few days

Still working on mine; like others I'm finding the Ivors a bit a struggle - the 8 listed categories haven't been consistently present, and secondly, the awards are for songwriting/composing, yet the front page of the thread states "Anyone who has won an Ivor Novello award (including band members as long as they were members at the time of the win)", from which I infer that performers can be valid picks too. Anyway I've picked 5 names, hopefully at least some of them qualify! Now onto spouses of heads of state/government!

Yes for categories like best selling and most performed song either the performer or the artist

As I said earlier the categories have changed so I will allow winners of defunct categories but not Lifetime achievement or special contribution awards

I've been busy, went to see Bruce Springsteen at Wembley twice and now have Covid

But I should be able to get team in by the deadline.

I'm afraid I will probably not play in round 6. A combination of busy life, a holiday abroad and (for me) difficult categories to research. But I'm looking forward to join up for round 7 and good luck to everyone in the upcoming game!

Team is in, a, good 2 & 1/2 hours before the deadline. That's positively early for me!

I certainly won't be winning on uniques. If I am to win, I think it will be 1 in each category, although I have a suspicion that the winner will be a clean sweep of political spouses.

I had no issue finding Novello winners. Surprisingly I found the hardest category to be the footballers. I just struggled to find decent comprehensive lists of internationals.

It'll be interesting to see how wide the Spouses selection will be. I can guess the two or three most popular picks, out of which I think I have one.

I did quite a bit of Spousal research, although not exhaustive and I was pleased I remembered there was a Political Spouses thread on here before I submitted. But I tried to play the game and not just pick the 5 oldest I could find, all of which would have been at least 97+. I'm sure others will have taken an alternate method, but I'll remind you that Agnes Keleti and Charles Coste are both still batting from the Olympians category a few rounds ago, and they're both in triple figures. Some of the low hanging fruit is quite difficult to pick still.

I was hoping to post some past game updates tonight, but it hasn't happened, so I'll do it tomorrow. I warn you: they're extensive.

Twenty seven teams in contention

Game is now underway but verification is still outstanding on about half the teams.

Hits are now legitimate so let me know if any of yours go and I will take account of death dates during the verification process

Thank you to everyone who submitted a team

While Biblio gets all the admin done for Round 6, time to have a look back at how previous rounds are progressing before we get engrossed in another Scavenger Hunt! I’m noting significant updates since January 2023, when Round 5 started… (and it may take a couple of posts!)

Game 1: June 2016-September 2017

Several players have completed the game via a different method in the past 18 months. @Handrejka completed her House of Lords Category with the death of Betty Boothroyd in February 2023 and @ImNotHades did likewise with the death of the 29th Earl of Crawford a month later. @CaptainChorizo followed suit in June 2023 with the death of 3rd Viscount Tenby. In July 2023, @Switch completed the game for a second time with the death of Tony Bennett seeing off all 5 of his #1 Hit Artists. The sad death of Richard Franklin in December saw @RadGuy score a hit in the Doctor Who category meaning he completed All 5 categories and won for a second time, while Handy scored her final Doctor Who death at the same time, meaning she’d completed a second full category, becoming the first person to win the game 4 times over (and she hadn’t completed once when the game actually ended!). And Ysanne Churchman’s death a few days ago was a Unique Pick for Switch, which allowed him to win again for 3 Uniques, completing the game all 3 ways. 9 of the 15 players who entered the original Scavenger Hunt have completed the game by all 3 methods now and 14 of the 15 have won at least once. Only poor @time, who has only had 9 of his 25 original picks die so far, has yet to finish Round 1, still needing one of Tony Caunter, Julian Glover, Frazer Hines, Milton Johns and Jean Marsh (all Dr Who alumni) to fall as his quickest method of completion. No one has successfully killed off all 25 of their picks yet, with me (@RoverAndOut) top of the pile with 22/25 (Jean Marsh, Lady Saltoun and Plas Johnson my remaining standers), closely followed by @Death Impends (21/25) and @Toast (20/25). Highest category for deaths across the entire game span is House of Lords with 34, followed by Doctor Who (25), #1 Hit Artists (20), Test Match Cricketers (18) and US Presidential Candidates (9 – none of whom is Jimmy Carter STILL!).

Game 2: March 2018-June 2020

Since January 2023, there have been 21 further scoring hits in the Round 2 categories. This has allowed 2 further players to complete this round of the game, both in July 2023: Arnaldo Forlani’s death (EU Leaders) saw @Spade_Cooley score a hit in all 5 categories, while Tony Bennett’s demise (Grammy Winners) allowed @FixedBusiness to complete by the same method. They finish in 14th and 15th place! In April 2023, April Stevens’ death allowed Death Impends to be the first person to complete Round 2 by all 3 possible methods, as all 5 of her Grammy Winners had fallen. Toast became the second to achieve this feat, after Burt Bacharach (Grammy Winners) became her third Unique Pick to fall in February 2023 and then in April 2024, Josip Manolic was her final EU Leader to die. He was also Fixed Business’s last EU Leader to fall, so he completed for a second time, less than a year after completing for the first time. But before him, Time won for a second time (more success in Round 2 than Round 1!) when Sinead O’Connor (Grammy Winners) became his 3rd Unique Pick to pass. 7 of the 15 players to start this round have completed the game by 2 methods, only 2 have completed by all 3 methods. And everybody has completed the game at least once, with Spade and Fixed Business being the last 2 last July! Toast has the most overall hits with 19 of her 25 having died, while me (Rover) and @Sir Creep are close behind with 16/25 dead. Most profitable category in this round so far has been Grammy Winners (31), followed by EU Leaders (19), Kevin Bacon Co-Stars (17), World Title Winning Boxers (13) and Dallas Stars (12).

Game 3: September 2020-May 2021

Continuing the theme of Round 3, which was a very speedy game due to a massacre of James Bond Stars, there have been a further 32 hits since January 2023 in this round. This has enabled a further 12 completions of the game, 6 of them completing the game for the first time! The death of Gianluca Vialli (World Cup Footballers) last January allowed @An Fear Beag to complete the game by a third and final method with a 3rd Unique Pick dying. He became the second to complete all 3 methods in this round. By the end of the same month, someone else had had a third Unique hit, and that was Time, with the death of Odd Borre (Eurovision Performers), which made him the 12th person to complete Round 3! 13th spot went to esteemed game runner @Bibliogryphon with the death of Kenzaburo Oe (Nobel Prize Winners) in March 2023, which was his third Unique Pick too. 14th spot went to @Great Uncle Bulgaria via the same method, with the death of Toto Cutugno (Eurovision Performers) in August 2023. In November 2023, @theoldlady became the 15th placed finisher in Round 3, with the passing of Henry Kissinger (Nobel Prize Winners). The next 4 completes were all for Whole Categories being completed, and they were all re-completes rather than new finishers: January 2024’s death of Mario Zagallo saw the final death in the World Cup Footballers category for both Death Impends and Toast, which was a second completion for Death Impends and a third for Toast, although she’d already completed by Whole Category in the Bond Category! The deaths of Kurt Hamrin and Jorge Toro in February were also in the World Cup category and saw Captain Chorizo and @msc respectively both complete for the second time. The same month, the death of Roger Guillemin (Nobel Prize Winners) saw @chilean way complete the game, finishing in 16th place. It also saw a first Nobel Prize hit for Captain Chorizo, who became the third person to complete Round 3 by all 3 methods! And before the month was out, Michael Culver (Bond Actors) died, which was, astonishingly, @Dying Probably’s first hit in the Bond category, which allowed him to complete in 17th place. Just one person has completed since then – me! My speculative punt on Mohammed Faris (Space Fliers) finally paid off and he gave me a third Unique Pick, allowing me to complete for a second time – it’s the first time I’ve ever been able to win by this method as I didn’t have 3 Uniques in Rounds 1 and 2! 3 players have completed Round 3 by all 3 methods and 5 more have completed twice. 17 of the 19 players have completed at least once, with @YoungWillz still needing a Space Flier (Vance Brand, Charlie Duke, Joseph Kerwin, Pyotr Klimuk or Ken Mattingly) to complete, and @YorkshireBanker needing either a Eurovision Performer (Romauld Figuier, Siw Malmqvist, Massiel, Simone de Olivieira or Iva Zanicchikaicek) or one of his 11 (ELEVEN) Unique Picks to die to get him to the finish line. Most hits in this round belongs to champion @Banana, with 21 of his 25 having fallen, closely followed by An Fear Beag (20) and @Grim Up North (18). Most prolific category in this round has been World Cup Footballers (23), followed by Nobel Prize Winners (17), James Bond Actors (15), Eurovision Performers (14) and Space Fliers (14). Incredibly, since the game ended in May 2021, there have only been 5 scoring hits in the James Bond category, compared to a whopping 10 in the 9 months of gameplay from September 2020 to May 2021 – how’s my luck when picking the categories?!

Will put the Round 4 update in a separate post, as it's quite big (obviously, more of those are still alive than earlier rounds, so more hits!)

Game 4: June 2021-November 2022

OK, this update has some interesting information, including some incredibly bad luck for one of the 18 players in Game 4. But we’ll get to that! Since this is the game before the current one concluded, I’ll discuss everything that happened since I won in November 2022, with the death of Jennifer’s dad, John Aniston (Star Trek Actors). A month later, Toast scored with the death of Gordy Giovanelli (Olympic Gold Medallists), which gave her a hit in All 5 Categories and have her 2nd place, the third time she has finished on a Scavenger Hunt podium without winning one! The podium positions were completed in February 2023 when Greta Andersen (Olympics) died, a third Unique Pick for @gcreptile! The death of Nigel Lawson in April 2023 was a big one, only the third death in the Cabinet Ministers category, which allowed msc, Death Impends and Spade Cooley all to cross the finish line in joint-4th with a hit in All 5 Categories, while gcreptile became the first person to complete twice over by the same method! Now, to the minor controversy: In May 2023, it was announced that Japanese gold medal winning boxer Osamu Watanabe had died. This was a hit for @Captain Hemlock, via 3 Unique Picks, and made him the 7th person to formally finish. However, he is incredibly unlucky, because the same article (in Japanese) states that he died on October 1st, 2022, it had only come to light in May through a relative. By the rules of the game, no announcement means no score, but if it had been announced in October, he would have beaten me to the win by over a month! It would have come just 11 days after he moved into a winning position with his second Unique Pick too! Sorry, Captain!

Over the next month, 4 more people completed the game. The death of Cabinet Minister Peter Brooke in May made @Perhaps the 8th finisher with a hit in All 5 Categories, and another Cabinet Minister John Morris’s demise in early June allowed @BuffaloPhil and former champion Banana to finish in joint-9th position by the same method. And a week later, Great Uncle Bulgaria completed via the same method with the demise of Pulitzer Prize Winner Cormac McCarthy, finishing 11th. The death of Sheldon Harnick in June completed my Pultizer Prize category, meaning I completed for a second time, becoming the second after gcreptile to do so, and msc completed the double completion podium when Henry Kamm died the following month, his final Pulitzer Prize Winner to fall. January this year saw @DeathByArsenic finish 12th with the death of his third Unique Pick Daniel Revenu (Olympians) before Banana completed for a second time in February with Kenneth Mitchell’s demise (Star Trek) – his third Unique Pick. World Series Winner Carl Erskine’s death in April was a first hit in the Baseball category for both Bibliogryphon and @arghton, and put them both over the top in Game 4 in joint-13th place, while his fellow World Series Winner Willie Mays departed in June to make Captain Chorizo the 15th person to complete Game 4.  Just a fortnight ago, the death of actor James Sikking (Star Trek) was a third Unique Pick for Toast, and she completed for a second time! And we’re done! Nobody has yet completed all 3 methods of victory, but 5 players have won twice and 15 of the 23 who entered have concluded the round one way or another. That leaves 8 players yet to complete. @MariNisia needs one of their 5 Olympians (Agnes Keleti, Greg Louganis, Aleksandr Medved, Takashi Ono and Mark Spitz) to pass, or else one of their 7 Unique Picks – either would win one way or another. Time needs one of his 5 Uniques (Joanna Miles, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, Franco de Piccoli, Judy Grinham and John Gummer) to cark to be victorious. Chilean Way needs one of their 5 Cabinet Ministers to die but they’ve not picked too well there, needing one of Gordon Brown, Charlie Falconer, James Mackay, John Prescott and Gillian Shepard to win, and there are far dodderier former ministers than those. An Fear Beag needs one of his 4 Olympic Gold Medallists to win (Opening Ceremony star Charles Coste, Agnes Keleti, Eric Lamaze or Koji Murofushi – unfortunately, his 5th pick, Vasily Borisov, died before the game started it has since been discovered, so is ineligible). The remaining 4 players need a bit more help. @GuyFromFuture needs 1 Gold Medallist and 1 Cabinet Minister, as does Young Willz and The Old Lady is not a sports fan, as she needs 1 Olympian and 1 Baseball, while Yorkshire Banker is in need of a fair bit of help, having just 2 hits so far, but they are at least in 2 different categories, so they need a Cabinet Minister, a Baseball player and a Star Trek actor to win – obviously ones they’ve picked, though, otherwise…well…you know. Most Hits so far in Game 4 belongs to msc, with 16 Hits, closely followed by 4 players on 15 (Death Impends, Toast, Perhaps and Banana). Most productive category in this round has been Olympic Gold Medallists (22), followed by Star Trek Actors (19), World Series Winners (18) and Pulitzer Prize Winners (16). There have, incredibly, only been 4 chosen Cabinet Ministers die since the game began – they’re stubborn buggers!

Game 5: January 2023-June 2024

Don’t think anybody else has died since William Russell (Coronation Street Actors) put Buffalo Phil over the top at the start of June, so nobody else has yet completed!
